Senators Kyl, Kirk Call on Iranian Government to Release Karroubi and Mousavi
WASHINGTON - U.S. Senators Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) today issued the following statement in response to reports the Iranian government arrested and imprisoned leading Iranian opposition leaders, Mehdi Karroubi and Mir-Hossein Mousavi, and their wives:
"Reports that the Iranian regime arrested and imprisoned opposition leaders Mehdi Karroubi, Mir-Hossein Mousavi and both men's wives show signs of a weakening dictatorship terrified of its own people. The regime is wrong to think that this latest despotic act will secure its power. The Iranian people will see this action for what it is, the desperate act of a corrupt and illegitimate regime.
"We urge the President to immediately and publicly call for the release of the Karroubis and Mousavis and to continue to do so until those presently in control of Iran have released these men and women and all other wrongfully imprisoned political dissidents. The Iranian people must know without doubt that the United States is firmly on their side in their ongoing struggle for human rights."
